Orson Scott Card's Kindle Review
Card's Become a Kindle Believer
In the debate of Kindle Vs Nook, it's always great to read user reviews to understand the products' appeal. Orson Scott Card, the acclaimed author, owns a Kindle and gave his own review of the device. It is interesting to see him provide his insight into the devices as he's made a number of comments in the past about the royalty issues involving the electronic book services.
Entering the market with a wariness and plenty of reservations, Orson Scott Card quickly became a believer in the potential offered by the Amazon Kindle.. Card loved the Kindle screen, saying it appears much like a regular page and is not backlit, helping with battery life. This is a common misconception from people who have never used an eReader as they think it is like a computer when in reality, the screen is very easy on the eyes.
In terms of functionality, the Kindle wins points from Card for its constant connection to Amazon, allowing quick purchase of books. It also has the security that if you lose your Kindle, you don't have to rebuy all your books which is a nice layer of protection. The devices are meant to provide easy access to tons of electronic books, and the Amazon Kindle did it very well.
Card also liked the Kindle's ability to highlight passages and the incredibly cheap prices for old books that are now in public domain. From my own perspective, it will be interesting to see if the steep discounts on these classics compared to other books will promote new readers to explore older books.
With respect to the actual Kindle device, Orson Scott Card was largely only upset by the fact that some authors selections were still fairly limited. This is a problem he blames largely on the Kindle's awful royalty system which can be read about further on our site.
Overall, Orson Scott Card was very impressed with the Kindle. Orson Scott Card's full review of the Kindle can be read at http://www.hatrack.com/osc/reviews/everything/2009-03-08.shtml
